Note: this package departs early morning on the first day and finishes late-afternoon/early evening of the last day. When planning your international flights you should arrive to San Jose at least the day before your departure and leave the day after the tour ends.

Day 1

Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River!

You will get picked up early from your hotel in San Jose (or Arenal area) for a thrilling whitewater rafting trip down Costa Rica’s most popular rafting river, Rio Pacuare! If you do not yet have a hotel for the night before you depart, we recommend the Hilton Garden Inn La Sabana.

This is our most popular rafting trip and Costa Rica’s premier river trip. The white water is equally exciting (rapids class III-IV). This is truly a memorable rafting trip and we can guarantee an awesome day with lots of laughs! All instruction and equipment is included. (This trip is suitable for ages 12 and over, if you have younger kids we’ll put you on a calmer river). Lunch is included on the shore of the river.

You’ll be back at the rafting company headquarters in time for a drink if you’d like and then transportation to your Puerto Viejo hotel is provided.

If you are looking to really maximize the rafting experience you can choose to spend an additional night on the river by upgrading your rafting choice to a 2-day rafting expedition with a night in a river lodge.This experience is definitely one that you will remember for years to come.

Day 2

Puerto Viejo –Jaguar Rescue Center and Punta Uva

This trip combines two activities: a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center and a visit to Punta Uvas sightseeing point.

The Jaguar Rescue Center rehabilitates mistreated, injured and/or confiscated animals, which are then reintroduced to their natural habitat in protected areas. Visitors have direct contact with monkeys, wild cats, sloths, raccoons, anteaters, marsupials, reptiles, amphibians, etc.

What to Bring: Close Toed Shoes, comfortable clothes that can get dirty, repellent, sunscreen, Swimsuit, towels, camera,water and  a bit of cash for beverages at Jaguar Rescue Center.

Day 3

Parque Nacional Tortuguero

We will pick you up at your Puerto Viejo hotel  Banana Azul and take a boat ride to Tortuguero. Breakfast is provided en route. Your hotel in Tortuguero is complete with a private bath, swimming pool and buffet meals! Tours included are 2 different canal trips in the national park, 1 guided hike and 1 trip to see the village of Tortuguero as well as a visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation.

Tortuguero National Park has a humid and tropical climate receiving up to 250 inches of rain a year. Its beaches are key nesting grounds for endangered sea turtles, such as Hawksbills, Loggerheads, Green Sea Turtles and Leatherbacks.

The rivers within the park are home to sensitive populations of manatees, as well as caimans, crocodiles, and Tropical Garfish, which are considered to be living fossils. The forests are home to jaguars, three species of monkeys (spider, howler, and white-faced Capuchin), and three-toed sloths. Basilisk lizards and poisonous frogs also inhabit the area, along with 375 species of birds including kingfishers, toucans, blue herons, macaws, and parrots.

There are more than 400 species of trees and approximately 2,200 species of plants.

Day 4

On the afternoon of your last day, transportation will be provided from Tortuguero to your hotel in San José or the Arenal area. If you do not yet have a hotel for the night before you depart we recommend the Hilton Garden Inn La Sabana.

Puerto Viejo Hotel Option

Banana Azul:

Banana Azul is a small hotel north of town beachfront on Playa Negra. This small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as do several freely-hanging hammocks and a meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles. There is a restaurant, bar, pool and beach club.

The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden.

Tortuguero Hotel Options

Pachira Lodge:

The lodge is strategically located only 5 minutes away from the extraordinary Tortuguero National Park, and right across the main “canal” facing the town of Tortuguero. Surrounded by a network of very scenic canals, this is considered one of the most exotic regions of the world, characterized by its rich flora and fauna.

Evergreen Lodge:

Evergreen is located in the northeastern corner of Tortuguero, 5 minutes by boat from the main entrance to Tortuguero National Park, and accessible only by air and water. Evergreen Lodge is the ideal location from which to explore this unique and magical area, surrounded by towering trees and exuberant vegetation.

San Jose Hotel Option

This upscale hotel, across the street from Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica stadium, is 4 km from live performances at the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica and 5 km from the exhibits at the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica.

Optional add-on to Bocas del Toro, Panama

Our Bocas del Toro trips include transportation from Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro, Panama, by way of shared van and boat ride to the islands. Choose your style of accommodations—either luxury option on the main island. Breakfast is included, and, depending on how many days you stay, an afternoon activity or a full-day tour with lunch as well. You also have the option to return to San Jose by land or air. For those staying only one night, you can either go snorkeling or deep boarding in the afternoon, before enjoying a lovely dinner in Bocas Town or at your lodge.

The following morning is your free day, to discover the islands or just relax on a secluded beach. At noon, you will begin your departure back to Puerto Viejo. If you choose to stay two nights, you will have the first day free to visit one of the nearby islands or just have a walk around town.

The second day, you will go on a tour to Cayo Zapatillo, where you can try out deep boarding, the new and fun way to snorkel. The tour includes snorkeling equipment and lunch. After a day of enjoying all the water fun, you can spend the evening in Bocas Town or at your lodge, and return to Puerto Viejo the next day after breakfast. If you would like an additional morning to explore the beautiful Bocas area, we can also schedule you for the afternoon shuttle back to Puerto Viejo or San Jose
